Installation of Xrdp (Remote Desktop) on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS/19.10!!


rdp (Remote Desktop): Xrdp is a free implementation of Microsoft RDP server. It allows users to access the Linux remote desktop via Windows RDP. The Xrdp offers a graphical login to remote machines by means of Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). In this tutorial, we will instruct how to install Xrdp (Remote Desktop) on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS/19.10.

Before starting with the Xrdp installation process, make sure you have logged in as a non-root user with sudo privileges.

Installing Xfce Desktop Environment:

  • Click on the shortcut CTRL+ALT+Tto open the Terminal on Linux Ubuntu .
  • For installing Xfce on your server, you have to run the below commands one-by-one on the Ubuntu Terminal.

Updating the Package:

First, update all the packages to the latest version with the following command:

Installing Xfce4:

First, we are going to install the Xfce desktop environment as it is perfect for the remote servers. Xfce is a lightweight, stable, and fast desktop environment. You can also install the Xrdp on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver.

sudo apt install xfce4 xfce4-goodies xorg dbus-x11 x11-xserver-utils

  • Press ‘y’ to continue.
  • You have to wait for some time until the installation process gets completed.

Installation of Xrdp Package:

By default, the Xrdp package is available in Ubuntu repositories.

Run the below command:

sudo apt install xrdp

Check the Status of Xrdp Service:

Xrdp should now be installed as a service on your server. You can check the service status by executing the below command.

sudo systemctl status xrdp

Restart Xrdp service:

You have to restart your Xrdp service whenever you make any changes to the configuration file.

sudo systemctl restart xrdp


Now, we have successfully installed the Xrdp (Remote Desktop) on Linux Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa/ 19.10 Eoan Ermine.
